It's not often that the defending NBA champions bring such a potentially intriguing roster to Summer League.
But as the Golden State Warriors embark on their "two timelines" plan, the month of July ends up being vital for their top young players to get some game action.
James Wiseman is likely to participate in game action, something he only did twice with the G League Santa Cruz Warriors in the 2021-22 season. The No. 2 overall pick from 2020 last played in an NBA game on April 10, 2021 and has missed 101 consecutive regular season games, in addition to the two play-in games from 2021 and all 22 playoff games from 2022.
Wiseman will be the center of attention for the Warriors' seven games in July — two at the Chase Center and five in Las Vegas. But Golden State's two 2021 lottery picks will have the spotlight on them, too.
Both Jonathan Kuminga and Moses Moody figure to get some extended game action after playing sporadically throughout the playoffs but having some bright spots. Kuminga may also play this summer with the Democratic Republic of the Congo's national team, but it is assumed he will play at least once with the Warriors.
Among the Warriors' 2022 draft picks, the status of Patrick Baldwin Jr. remains the biggest mystery. Selected at No. 28 — the same spot the Warriors took Jordan Poole in 2019 — Baldwin is still rehabilitating an ankle injury that hampered his lone college season and had his draft stock plummet.
It isn't certain if Baldwin's ankle can recover in time to play at any point in July, but he expressed confidence in being able to play at his post-draft press conference on Friday. Both he and Ryan Rollins, the 44th pick, are expected to be on the Warriors' regular season roster.
Warriors fans can even get a glimpse at these players here in the Bay Area, as Golden State will host the California Classic on July 2 and 3. The Warriors will face the Kings at 4:30 p.m. on July 2 and the Lakers at the same time the next day. The Heat will also play against the Lakers and Kings, respectively, at 2 p.m. on those days.
When the Warriors head to Las Vegas, they'll face the Knicks at 5 p.m. on July 8, the Spurs at 4:30 p.m. on July 10, the Celtics at 5 p.m. on July 12 and the Thunder at 4:30 p.m. on July 15. There will also be one additional game on either July 16 or July 17, which won't be determined until after the first four games are completed.
