A visual effects artist recently created a video to show the fictional removal of the Barge from Sunset Beach. The VFX artist, who goes by the online name Nahuel, shared their work on Reddit and also published the YouTube video: Made Vancouver barge disappear with the help of a sea monster. Park Board is still in the process of formulating a plan to remove the Barge. We have some photos from back in November 2021 here; it's been over 6 months since the Barge washed ashore.
Regarding the background and motivation to create the video, here's a little background from the artist:
Yes I had walked many times by the barge since it crashed, I normally go for a walk at the seawall after work.
And I always I said to myself "I have to do some creative VFX with it"
I would also hear people chatting about how/when it is going to be removed and taking pictures with it. And one day when there was a low tide I was looking at the gap between sand and the barge, and I had this idea that some tentacles slowly appear from the darkness underneath the barge and start wrapping around its walls. Then it would start pulling it towards the ocean until it completely disappears.
The entire process to make the video took about 20 days. It was created using a combination of several software packages including The Foundry's Nuke, SideFX Houdini and Adobe Photoshop. Here's some further technical information about the creation of the video.
I did the tracking within Nuke as well. It was rendered with a static camera and some overscan and I applied the camera movement from the plate in Nuke. I didn't use any HDRI.
For the lighting I projected the clean plate into a grid facing the camera which recreated the reflections from the real water into the cg water. The barge texturing was a simple projection as well.
Apparently they have plans to chop it up in small chunks in the near future.
VFX artist Nahuel noted in a reply on Reddit:
Yes I do this professionally. I spent like 20 days working on it, the last 8 days of those were spent for the rendering of the 3d water simulation and sea creature. Read more of this post
