Have you seen the Ukiah High School Wrestling team out working in the community in the past few months?
The Ukiah Wrestling Club (UWC) is the sponsor organization for our Ukiah High School Wrestling Team. The team has looked for creative ways to fundraise to cover the cost of a one-week, and a two-week, intensive summer camp program for our athletes to attend this summer. We worked with local community leaders to involve the athletes in community service work and environmental cleanup projects. These projects kicked off with a work day at the Hopland School with the Sheriff where the club provided over fifty hours of service work; weeding, cleaning up debris piles, and painting. The next place you may have seen the wrestlers was at the Community Tire roundup event where we had seventeen wrestlers show up to transfer the contributed tires into the trailers provided by CalTrans. These two projects are just the start to what we hope to be a full summer of community engagement.
In addition to raising funds to support the summer camps the UWC, the club strongly believes that keeping our athletes involved in community service will help the youth take pride in their community and encourage them to get involved in community leadership. By doing these projects the athletes are meeting, working with, and creating important contacts that will help guide them down a positive path through high school, college, and into adulthood.
The work the athletes are doing is being tracked and the intent of the UWC is to be able to present to the athletes how much money was received through community service hours, and in donations, at the end of the summer. This will be a rewarding demonstration of how our student athletes can achieve success by performing hard work, practicing teamwork, following through on commitments, and utilizing leadership skills.
The UWC would like to give special thanks to our local and county law enforcement, especially Sheriff Kendall, District Attorney Eyster, and Police Chief Waidelich, along with the Ukiah City Council and the County of Mendocino Board of Supervisors, especially Mayor Jim Brown and Supervisor Mo Mulheren, for their support and guidance.
We hope the community is as excited about this fundraising project as our UWC athletes and parents are. In addition to this great program the UWC is actively looking for ways to cover the cost of much needed new wrestling mats. Currently the teams are struggling to fit onto two mats and are in critical need of extra surfaces for daily practice. The existing mats are not sufficient and the team needs new mats to realize the full potential of our practice time. If you have any ideas for community service for our hardworking and talented athletes please let us know. The new matts will cost approx. $40,000.
If you'd like to show your support or share some encouraging words, donations and letters or notes to the team, can be mailed to UWC, PO Box 1354, Ukiah CA 95482.
Donations are tax deductible. Contact UWC President and UHS Boys Wrestling Coach Thomas Fragoza with any questions or for more information at 707-714-0057.
