Reliever John Brebbia will start tonight's game in Miami instead of Alex Cobb, the Giants announced late Friday morning.
Cobb was scratched from the start because of lower back tightness. He's considered day-to-day.
Brebbia (3-0, 3.32 ERA) has never started a regular-season or playoff game in his five MLB seasons between the Cardinals and Giants. He's never gone longer than two innings in a single outing, either, so manager Gabe Kapler will surely be turning to his bullpen throughout Friday night's game. San Francisco is on the eighth game of a 10-game road trip with no off days.
Cobb, who joined the Giants this winter as a free-agent signee, had a stint on the injured list in April for an adductor strain.
The Giants are already missing starting pitchers Anthony DeSclafani and fellow offseason addition Matthew Boyd from the rotation due to injury.
Brebbia won't be the only unfamiliar starting pitcher Friday night. Richard Bleier (0-0, 5.23 ERA) will take the mound for the Marlins after Eliezer Hernandez was scratched. Bleier has one career MLB start in seven seasons with the Yankees, Orioles and Marlins.
Here's the Giants lineup Bleier will be facing:
DH Tommy La Stella
CF Mike Yastrzemski
1B Wilmer Flores
LF Joc Pederson
SS Brandon Crawford
3B Evan Longoria
RF Luis González
2B Donovan Walton
C Curt Casali
