American Legion Baseball Post 550 returns to Vallejo Sunday at Wilson Park.
At 11 a.m. American Legion Baseball Post 550 will host the four-time defending champions of the American Legion North League, Petaluma Leghorns. It has been 26 years since the last American Legion ball game was played in Vallejo.
"Our long term goals with this team are to become the crown jewel of Vallejo baseball, assist in the return of Little League baseball to Vallejo and to attract thousands of ball players and fans to the City of Vallejo on an annual basis," George Fuller, the vice commander of American Legion Post 550, said. "This will be accomplished through our home games and the hosting of tournaments and events at Wilson Park. Our main goal next year is to host a MLB sponsored Hit, Pitch and Run competition for youth of various age groups not only from Solano County but for kids from all over the Bay Area."
Fuller said in the past the team has been referred to as "Vallejo Post 550 Baseball," but changed it since players are more spread out.
"I no longer feel comfortable with that designation since we have players from all the local High Schools to include Vallejo High School, Bethel High School, American Canyon High School, Benicia High School, St.Patrick-St.Vincent, and North Hills Christian," Fuller said. "Additionally, we have several players from Rodriguez High School who were graciously allowed to play with us this year despite being in the recruiting zone of the American Legion Fairfield Expos team headed by Mr. Brad Hanson."
