With spring fully underway, residents are beginning to think of yard and landscape maintenance, as warmer temperatures makes spending time outside more enjoyable. Fortunately for those who could use a little help in the area, BC Landscape Maintenance is offering services throughout the county.
Established in February by local couple Bryan and Hayley Christensen , Hayley takes care of the office work and scheduling while Bryan does the landscape maintenance side of things, with Hayley occasionally lending a hand when she can.
The company does smaller installs of garden beds, flower beds and grass or sod. They plant, prune, remove unwanted ground cover, mulching, small installation of rocks and blackberry bush removal.
As necessary in Mendocino County, Bryan and Hayley are knowledgeable on deer resistant and drought tolerant plant varieties. Rock instead of tradition grass is recommended, or a drought resistant grass. Hayley said, "There is one called fiber-optic and I am in love with it." Bryan added, "My favorite is a bluegrass." They threw out plenty of other options for beautiful landscaping that can withstand drought conditions, such as low lying shrubs or succulents.
Hayley explained she is creating a list specific to the local area on what the deer around here will and won't eat.
Bryan got his start in the field working at Hayley's brother's business, Nicklaus Landscaping, for several years. Hayley took care of the office tasks for her brother's company and continues to do so. When Nicklaus decided he no longer wanted to do maintenance but rather focus on larger installs, the Christensens saw it as an opportune time to establish their own business, bringing expertise and experience to the new business, along with a high standard of care that was established through working at Nicklaus Landscaping.

While working at Nicklaus Landscaping, Bryan took courses at Mendocino College to further develop his skills in agriculture and pruning. He specializes in roses. Hayley said of BC Landscape Maintenance, "We really are trying to get the feeling for our business that it's more than just a mow and blow kind of thing. That's not what we do. We really want to give that next level of service."
For this time of year, Bryan recommends getting the yard ready to where it could be maintained on a weekly or bi-monthly basis. He said it's a good time to do, "a lot of spring cleaning; getting gutters cleaned out from all the fall leaves, getting the proper plants planted, get the proper pruning done. It's a good time to keep hedges trimmed back and shaped, remove weeds and dead stems and leaves.
While working at a Willits residence, he explained they were removing weeds from an overgrown yard by hand, as requested by the homeowner, to ensure the roots were removed and plants would not grow back
The Christensens have lived in Willits for five years and are raising their three children here. They also own another business Freedom Farms, a horse blanket cleaning business, which was established by Hayley's mother. The flexibility of being business owners allows them both to be actively involved in their children's school, and able to make children's appointments and extracurricular activities.
Bryan enjoys what he does, and is excited to show the before and after photos of his work, which are available on the company's Facebook page at BC Landscape Maintenance. He said, "Just seeing that, we like to call it a yard refresh, and the yard being totally reformed, is a really cool thing to see. And, to help somebody out like that."
