A bomb threat at Vallejo City Hall caused the evacuation of approximately 50 to 60 staff employees Monday afternoon — , before an all-clear was given about two hours later.

All City Hall employees were electronically alerted at 2:42 p.m.of a bomb threat that was received by a phone call. City Hall security enforced the evacuation order at the same time. The same applied for the Housing Authority building across the street as well as anyone inside the JFK Library nearby.

Dogs from Travis Air Force Base were sent into the building to look for potential odd smells and/or sights that might signify a bomb. As of 4:15 p.m. Monday the dogs were still searching inside each of the four floors on the building. No threat was found, and at 4:30 p.m. the all-clear was given.

Interim City Manager Mike Malone was one of a few city employees waiting outside in the parking lot near the waterfront as the dogs searched the building at 555 Santa Clara Street.

"We received a call from the sheriff that there was a bomb threat in the building," Malone said. "He told us to evacuate the building so we then took the steps needed to do that. I made contact with all the employees and went to every floor and even the library since they are so close."

Malone said he's been in tense situations like this before, including the Loma Prieta earthquake, but had never been in a building when a bomb threat had been issued.

"First time this has happened to me in over 30 years," Malone said. "The key thing is to stay calm and talk calm. The last thing you want to do is create a panic."

Malone said that although the search was still on, the planning commission meeting was still scheduled to take place if the building was deemed safe by all Vallejo Fire and Police Department personnel. The sister city meeting scheduled to take place at 4:30 p.m. was canceled.
