On our Design Tuesdays, we like to praise the best projects, from everywhere. Today's project is about a hillside home in Monterey that is a true California retreat.

The studio responsible for such an amazing project was Studio Schickedanz which is located in the same state. In this project, you will be amazed by how well the house is framed into the landscape, and the two act as one.

Mal Paso Residence: A true California retreat

The project finished in 2020 is a true example that a modern home can be an integral part of the landscape. What once was a family weekend retreat project, soon became a luxury lockdown house during the pandemics.

The architecture team designed a house with low-lying ceilings that merges with the surrounding landscape.

Another great feature that this California retreat has is the floor-to-ceiling glass windows that are present on both East and West walls. This provides natural lighting, the entrance of fresh air, and magnificent views over the vast Pacific Ocean.

It is also possible to enjoy such breathtaking views in the outdoor central courtyard area. In this space, there is an outdoor pool ocean-front and a lounge area, so relaxing moments are granted.

Interior Scheme

The Mal Paso Residence is full of delightful rooms. It has a game room, a den, a dreamy open kitchen. Among the interior details, we would like to highlight the rock walls made out of local granite and the neutral and earth tone colors. All of this emphasizes, even more, the rustic side that this California retreat transmits.

The furnishings are from luxury brands like B&B Italia, Tai Ping, Concrete Works, and Holly Hunt. Some of them are custom design which adds a special and unique feeling.

Like all of this wasn't enough to make this an amazing house, it has also a sustainable side. The architecture team integrated solar panels and tesla power walls that are enough for the necessary energy of the house, as well as recharging two electric vehicles.
