MIDDLETOWN — One night after a down-to-the-wire 55-53 win over an undefeated Cloverdale squad, the Middletown High School varsity boys basketball team experienced no such drama while routing the Willits Wolverines 69-31 at The Barn in Middletown.

Lucas DaCosta (16 points), Brody Breeden (15 points), Cole Ketchum (14 points) and Wyatt Grothe (11 points) all scored in double figures as the Mustangs (8-1 league, 16-3 overall) cruised past the Wolverines to remain atop the NCL I standings with the Cloverdale Eagles (10-1, 20-1). The teams are tied in the loss column heading into the final week of the regular season, with the Mustangs scheduled to play four more games -- Monday at Lower Lake, Tuesday at Willits, Thursday at home against Roseland University Prep, and Saturday at Kelseyville.

"It was lethargic compared to last night," Middletown head coach G.J. Rockwell said of the game atmosphere after Friday's big victory at Cloverdale where there were only 50 fans in the stands because of Sonoma County's COVID-19 protocols regarding indoor sporting events. "There were more fans here tonight, but there wasn't the same kind of energy. Last night was high energy."

DaCosta sank four of Middletown's seven 3-pointers while leading a balanced Mustangs attack.

"He was on a little bit," Rockwell said of DaCosta.

Middletown led 17-8 after one quarter and spent the remainder of the game adding to its lead

The Mustangs also won the junior varsity game, 56-37, behind 23 points from Brandon Costlow, 10 from Oscar Cruz and seven from Dom Williams.

Middletown's JVs are 7-2 in league and 11-5 overall.
