LAKEPORT — Clear Lake High School honored its seven seniors on Tuesday night and they rewarded their fans with a 49-35 victory over the Fort Bragg Timberwolves in North Central League I varsity boys basketball action at Lakeport.
Two of those seven, Jack Daskam and Joey Soderquist, were especially effective in the win over the Timberwolves. Jack Daskam scored a team-high 17 points, going 7-for-8 from the free-throw line, while Joey Soderquist added 15 points, 13 of which came in the first half as the Cardinals (7-3 league, 11-9 overall) built a 28-12 halftime lead.
"Jack played phenomenal," Clear Lake head Mike Damiata said. "He's a little undersized for a big guy but he's so strong. He played well at both ends."
Soderquist sparked the Clear Lake offense early on as he scored 10 points in the first quarter, including a pair of 3-pointers.
Damiata also praised the defense of senior Maddox Albaum.
"He guarded their big guy (Travis Paoli) and didn't give an inch," Damiata said.
Fort Bragg was never closer than nine points in the second half. The Timberwolves lost their leading scorer on the season, Rhett Bennett, to a rolled ankle late in the second quarter.
Clear Lake also won the junior varsity game, 58-38, behind three 3-pointers and 16 points overall from Peyton Portlock and 13 from Graden Greer.
"We brought a different kind of energy today," head coach Shady Cerezo said. "The intensity was there all game."
Cerezo said Portlock "was ready to shoot the ball" every time he touched it.
"It was an all-around team effort," Cerezo said. "The bench guys brought the same energy as the starters."
Middletown 65, Willits 22
At Willits, all 11 Middletown players scored as the Mustangs improved to 10-1 in league and 18-3 overall. They are in a virtual tie with Cloverdale (11-1) atop the NCL I standings.
Lucas DaCosta had the hot hand for Middletown, going off for a team-best 20 points, including a pair of 3-pointers.
"He had a lot of steals that led to a lot of layups that got him into a rhythm," Middletown head coach G.J. Rockwell said. "His defense sling-shotted him into a real good offensive night."
DaCosta barely played in the second half as Middletown's reserves took over after the Mustangs' starters built a 35-15 halftime lead.
Rockwell had high praise for his guards.
"Our guards played pretty well today, all of them," Rockwell said.
Wyatt Grothe and Wyatt Moore had seven points apiece in the win.
"(Cole) Ketchum didn't show up in the scoring, but he did a lot for us," Rockwell said. "He had around five steals and five assists."
The Mustangs play their final home game of the regular season Thursday against Roseland University Prep.
Middletown also won the JV game, 51-25, with Dom Williams and Oscar Cruz leading the way with 12 points apiece. Anthony Bowerman and Brandon Costlow finished with seven points each and Cooper Johnson had six.
"We went over the top of their defense and got some easy baskets inside," head coach Jake Diehl said.
All of Williams' points came on 3-pointers, including three treys in the fourth quarter when the Mustangs outscored Willits 19-4 to put the game away.
Cloverdale 66, Kelseyville 31
At Cloverdale, after playing a competitive first quarter, the Kelseyville Knights were never seen again in a lopsided loss to the Cloverdale Eagles.
"We kind of only showed up for the first quarter," Kelseyville head coach Oscar Lopez said.
Kelseyville (5-5, 9-10) trailed just 12-11 after the opening period. The rest of the game belonged to Cloverdale as the Eagles outscored the Knights by a combined 43-10 over the next two quarters.
Luke Watkins led the Knights with 14 points while younger brother Kyle Watkins had nine.
"He played his butt off," Lopez said of Kyle Watkins, who sustained a cut lip after taking an elbow in the mouth, according to Lopez.
The Knights stay on the road Wednesday to play Fort Bragg.
Fort Bragg also won the JV game, 52-28. Ryder Leary's 11 points led the Knights and Diego Lopez had six.
Upper Lake 69, Tomales 45
At Tomales, Sammy Avalos had six rebounds and six assists to go along with his team-leading 25 points as the Upper Lake Cougars rolled past the Tomales Braves in NCL II action.
The Cougars (4-5, 11-9) wasted no time jumping on the Braves. They had a 23-13 lead after one quarter and a 42-19 halftime advantage.
"All nine players, all of them helped in some way, shape or fashion," Upper Lake head coach Miles Hayes said. "It was nice to watch."
Kai Young (20 points) and Kyle Grandi (12 points, eight assists) joined Avalos in double digits. Blaine Rhodes added five points and five steals.
Upper Lake closes out its league and regular-season schedule Thursday at home against Sonoma Academy.
