UPPER LAKE — Sammy Avalos scored twice and Manny Villalobos added a goal and two assists as the Upper Lake Cougars beat the Point Arena Pirates 3-2 in a North Central League II boys soccer game Friday afternoon in Upper Lake.
The two teams went to the half tied 1-1.
Upper Lake's defense held off a number of Point Arena attacks in the second half.
"We have a new goalkeeper," Upper Lake head coach Thomas Santana said of sophomore Darian Loans Arrow. "He played really strong for us. He had seven saves and they were key."
Point Arena wasn't happy with the way things were going in the second half and the anger was rising on the Pirates' bench, according to Santana.
"It was a very chippy game," Santana said. "Their coach and players were talking a lot. Our boys fought through it and didn't get caught up in it."
One Point Arena player eventually received a red card.
The Cougars improved to 2-1-2 in the NCL II standings and 3-5-3 overall with the victory. They hit the road Wednesday to play Mendocino.
