FORT BRAGG — The Clear Lake Cardinals weren't as sharp as head coach Mark Cory would have liked coming into Friday's road game against the Fort Bragg Timberwolves, but they were sharp enough to beat the Timberwolves 47-0 in North Central League I varsity football action.

"We did better as the game went along and played pretty well in the second half," Cory said of the Cardinals' first action since a 43-0 home win over Lower Lake on Oct. 8. Their Oct. 15 game at St. Helena was canceled because of a COVID-19 quarantine that affected Clear Lake team members.

"We're very thrilled to be back on the field playing," Cory said.

Quarterback Jack Daskam had a big night, passing for 295 yards and five touchdowns, four of them to Zane Robinson, who had eight catches for 157 yards. Daskam also ran for another score.

"He scrambled around and found guys," Cory said of Daskam.

Robinson was no less impressive as he caught a pair of 18-yard TD passes, a 74-yarder on a screen pass in the second quarter, and a 23-yarder in the third quarter.

"He did a nice job getting open even though they double-teamed him," Cory said. "He made people miss him on that screen pass."

Clear Lake (4-0 league, 6-1 overall) led 21-0 after one quarter, 34-0 at halftime and 41-0 through three quarters. The game ended with a running clock.

While the Cardinals had a big night on offense, their defense continued its season-long trend of solid play. The Timberwolves never came close to scoring and finished with only 14 yards of offense.

"The defense played really well, I don't even know if they had a first down," Cory said.

In addition to catching a 7-yard touchdown on offense, Cody Hayes returned an interception 24 yards for a touchdown on defense, one of three picks on the night by the Cardinals — Daskam and Saul Reyes had the others. Clear Lake also recovered two fumbles and had two sacks.

The Cardinals are home next Friday to play Willits (2-2, 2-5).
