UPPER LAKE — Zoey Petrie wasn't messing around in the third set of Upper Lake's 26-19, 26-24, 25-10 victory over the Credo Gryphon on Thursday evening in Upper Lake.

Petrie, a senior, put an exclamation point on the Cougars' three-set sweep by serving 10 straight points in the final game, and eight of them were aces.

"We just brought it home that third game," Upper Lake head coach Dani Paige Gudmundson Pena said.

Credo put up a bit of a fight in the first two sets although Gudmundson substituted freely in set two to make sure all of her players received some court time during homecoming week.

"Everyone got to play," Gudmundson Pena said.

Upper Lake improved to 6-1 in the North Central League II standings with five matches remaining.

Rylee Dalton and Taylar Minnis also figured prominently in the win, according to Gudmundson Pena.

Dalton served eight points in the first set while Minnis had six kills, one less than Petrie.

Upper Lake won the junior varsity match 25-19, 25-8 behind six kills and four aces from Treasure Hodges, four kills apiece from Rainy Minton and Jaydyn Poe, four aces from Samara Halvorsen, and 12 assists from Hope Marcks.

"The girls all played great tonight," Upper Lake head coach Fawn Rave said. "It took a minute for them to find their rhythm, but they got it. All the girls did great from the service line and they were swinging at the net hard tonight."

The Cougars are on the road Tuesday to play Calistoga.

Clear Lake def. St. Helena

At St. Helena, the dentist makes house calls — or in this case, gym calls — when the St. Helena Saints are playing at home. And the Cardinals needed one Thursday night as they rallied for a 21-25, 25-12, 25-6, 25-11 victory in NCL I action.

It was Clear Lake's third match in three days and its second straight road trip following a five-set loss at Fort Bragg on Wednesday night.

"The girls got in late last night and we were on the road today by 2 p.m.," Clear Lake head coach Marci Psalmonds said. "I could tell they were tired."

Clear Lake (8-2) was able to overcome its lethargic start and dominate the final three sets thanks largely to the play middle hitters Abby Mertle and Montana Wells. Mertle finished with seven kills and a team-high 10 blocks while Wells had a team-best eight kills to go along with three blocks.

"My middles really stepped it up," Psalmonds said. "I don't remember the last time I had a girl get 10 blocks."

Also for the Cardinals, Zoey Pepper added seven kills and four aces, Camrin Pivniska had five kills and three aces, and libero Raina Clifton contributed 26 digs and three aces.

Clear Lake back row specialist Cady Harmon had to leave the match after she caught a teammate's elbow in her mouth, which pushed one tooth back into another, resulting in the partial loss of a tooth, according to Psalmonds.

"Before I knew it a dentist was checking her out," Psalmonds said. "They told me his office was only like a mile away and they wanted to take her for X-rays."

As a temporary fix, Harmon had two front teeth glued together.

"They really took care of us," Psalmonds said of the St. Helena staff.

In JV action, Clear Lake defeated St. Helena 25-19, 25-12 behind a strong serving night from Rylie Andrews and a good all-around performance from Rubi Ford.

Andrews served for 14 points, two of them aces, as Clear Lake improved to 7-3 in league play. Ford led the team in both aces (four) and kills (five). Maddy Brewster added seven digs.

"St. Helena is a pretty good team," Clear Lake head coach Morgan Psalmonds said. "Like us they're young and need experience. They have real good hitters."

Clear Lake's teams are home Wednesday instead of Tuesday to play league-leading Roseland University Prep of Santa Rosa. The matches were moved back a day because RUP had transportation issues, according to Psalmonds.
