Two people suspected of attempted murder were arrested in Willits recently, the Mendocino County Sheriff's Office reported.
According to the MCSO, the incident began when deputies received a report of a man having been shot in the hand in Leggett, located in the northwest corner of Mendocino County, around 11 p.m. on May 10.
While deputies were responding, they were informed that the victim, identified only as a 56-year-old Leggett man, reported that he had arrived home with his girlfriend to find the suspects, identified as Amanda D. Chapman, 42, of Ukiah, and Gregory M.Cox, 59, of Vallejo, on his property uninvited and "an argument ensued."
Chapman then reportedly "brandished a firearm and pointed it at the victim, (who) attempted to take the firearm from Chapman, (who then) discharged the firearm, striking the victim in the hand."
After being shot, the victim reports that he was "able to take the firearm from Chapman," then the suspects fled, and the victim went inside his residence to call the MCSO while "barricading" himself in the house with his girlfriend due to the whereabouts of the suspects being unknown.
The victim told responding deputies that "he noticed a dark-colored pickup truck a short distance from the entrance gate to his property when he arrived (that he believed) belonged to Chapman and Cox." When deputies arrived at the victim's home, they summoned emergency medical personnel and checked the property for the suspects, locating neither them nor their vehicle.
After developing "probable cause to believe Chapman and Cox had conspired to go to the property to steal from the victim (and that) Chapman intentionally pointed the firearm at the victim and intended to shoot the victim during the incident," MCSO deputies issued a "Be-On-The-Look-Out (BOLO) for Chapman, Cox, and the pickup truck to all Law Enforcement Agencies in Mendocino, Humboldt, and Lake Counties."
Several hours later around 7 a.m. on May 11, a MCSO deputy responding to a non-emergency call inorth of Willits reportedly saw a vehicle believed to be the suspects' pick-up truck "and turned around to find it."
Following the truck into a residential area, the deputy briefly lost sight of it, then located it near a residence and watched "a female matching Chapman's description go back and forth from the pick-up truck to the residence."
Once more law enforcement personnel responded, Chapman was reportedly seen climbing a fence while trying to flee, then "apprehended on the other side of the fence. Cox attempted to hide inside the residence, but eventually surrendered after the residence was surrounded."
After obtaining search warrants for the home and vehicle, deputies arrested Chapman on suspicion of attempted murder, attempted second-degree robbery, and conspiracy; Cox was arrested on suspicion of attempted second-degree robbery and conspiracy. Both were then booked into Mendocino County Jail.
