Blue Lakes - The bass fishing on the peaceful Upper Blue Lake has picked up. The morning hours have been the best time to fish. Some anglers have been catching bass on a top water lure. (Shad colored Zara Spook Puppy) Work the shoreline in cover along the Le Trianon side of the lake. I have also received reports of some nice bass being hooked in the creek channel near the Blue Lakes Lodge.
Trout anglers have also been doing pretty good. The gang who fish from the banks along Hwy. 20 say the morning hours are the best time to fish. Trollers have also been catching their fair share of trout. The key has been to get your Action Disk down 20 to 25 feet.
Clear Lake - Right now is the best time of the year to fish Clear Lake. The water quality for the most part is pretty good (although an algae bloom has already begun in the Red Bud area). With many bass up in the shallows now ( mostly the south end of the lake ) , it's kind of like they are spawning in shifts. One angler told me that the best bait he's used for bedding bass is a salamander lure. He has been pitching it onto the nest and the fish just eat it up. Sounds good to me, I'll have to give it a try. Like Blue Lakes, the wind has picked up in the late morning and early afternoon. This makes it hard to keep your boat in position to sight fish for bedding bass.
Lake Mendocino - Our hometown lake is at the best it has been so far this year! Every species of fish are biting. Crappie, Red Ears, Catfish, Stripers, Large and Smallmouth bass and don't forget about the newly reintroduced Trout. Just as I thought, the large bass in Lake Mendocino are eating some of the trout. As Fish and Game continues to stock our lake with Trout, 8 to 10 pound Bass will not be all that uncommon. Good baits on our lake right now are a Storm Crappie swimbait. Rat-L-Traps, drop shotting, senkos or Robo worms and slow dragging a Brushhog or Sweet Beaver. (Red, purple and green are all good plastics colors.)
Lake Pillsbury - The word is that the anglers that have made the slow trip over the mountain to Lake Pillsbury have been rewarded. Many nice limits of bass and trout are being caught. The word is that Lake Pillsbury was stocked with trout last week. The lake is full and there are not that many folks on the water yet. Mid week fishin' is the best. You'll pretty much have the lake to yourself. Have fun, be safe and enjoy the beauty of Lake Pillsbury.
FYI - The California Department of Fish and Wildlife has been doing an excellent job stocking our waterways with trout this year. Here are some of the places that have received fish plants. A bird told me that Lake Emily, Willits (up in Brooktrails) is going to get a trout plant soon. The Russian River at the Potter Valley bridge has been stocked for the last few weeks and will be stocked this week with rainbows again this week.
Be kind. Be safe. Take a kid fishing. Please practice catch and release.
Have a great week fishing and remember to keep it reel. Don 4REEL Fishin'
