The Yolo County Community is invited to attend the official unveiling of the new Story Trail installation at Capay Open Space Park.
A collaboration between the Yolo County Library and General Services Department's Parks Division, the celebration is set for Saturday, Dec. 16, from 1 to 3 p.m. at 15603 County Road 85 in Capay, according to a press release from the county.
Derived from the StoryWalk Project, selected stories will reflect the diverse landscape, wildlife and people of California and the United States to promote nature literacy alongside early literacy. The StoryWalk Project was created in 2007 by Anne Ferguson, a chronic disease prevention specialist and developed with the Kellogg-Hubbard Library. Ferguson wanted to create "something different, fun, and interesting" to promote physical activity among parents and their children.
Selected stories will be changed quarterly, and bilingual stories will be featured regularly.
Festivities will be kicked off with a ceremonial ribbon-cutting ceremony at 1 p.m.
"Afterwards participants can follow the Story Trail's path of pages, featuring SeƱorita Mariposa by Ben Gundersheimer," said the press release. "With vivid illustrations by Marcos Almada Rivero, this bilingual picture book explores the extraordinary annual migration of monarch butterflies through rhyming text."
Following the unveiling of the trail, attendees will have the opportunity to wander through a resource fair and stop at various stations. Local organizations Aliados Health, Bohart Museum of Entomology, California State Parks, Latino Outdoors, Putah Creek Council, Tuleyome, Yolo Basin Foundation, and Yolo Sol Collective will provide educational information, activities, and giveaways. Children will also have the opportunity to enjoy creating butterfly-themed crafts.
At 2 p.m., Magical Moonshine Theatre will present a bilingual puppet show.
"Set in old Mexico, 'The Golden Armadillo' tells the tale of the mayor's daughter who never smiled, that is until she saw the most amazing and hilarious sight!" the press release continued. "This participatory play will energize its audience as they help with the puppets, play roles, and contribute dramatic performances in Spanish and English."
Attendees are recommended to bring water, snacks and low chairs or a blanket are encouraged to wear sturdy walk shoes and dress appropriately.
In the event of rain, the ribbon-cutting ceremony and resource fair will be postponed, and the puppet show will move to the Mary L. Stephens Davis Branch Library, located at 315 E. 14th St. in Davis.
