LEONARDTOWN, MD - This week marks the commencement of Red Ribbon Week, a national campaign that fosters a healthy, drug-free lifestyle among students. In a significant collaborative effort, the St. Mary's County Health Department (SMCHD) has partnered with the St. Mary's County Public Schools (SMCPS) to provide activities promoting drug prevention and awareness.
Red Ribbon Week, observed annually from October 23 to 31, is a cornerstone of the National Family Partnership's initiative and is the oldest and most extensive drug prevention campaign in the United States. It has successfully reached millions of young individuals across the nation over the years, emphasizing the significance of living a life free from substance abuse.
Under this year's theme, "Be Kind to Your Mind. Live Drug-Free," Red Ribbon Week underscores the message that living a drug-free life empowers individuals to attain their fullest potential. To translate this theme into action, communities host various drug prevention activities to make a visible stand for healthier lifestyles.
Tammy Loewe, the Director of the Behavioral Health Division at SMCHD, expressed appreciation for the partnership with SMCPS in delivering the message of Red Ribbon Week to students. "By living drug-free, our youth can become their best self," she noted.
